This guide describes the configuration of a PPTP connection on Mac OS X Mountain Lion using the Operating Systems built-in client.
It is recommended to use OpenVPN to connect to our service. OpenVPN surpasses firewalls and routers easier and is more secure than PPTP. PPTP is considered broken and should really only be used on platforms where OpenVPN is not available.
Instead of setting up PPTP, please follow the corresponding OpenVPN guide.
To start configuring a new network connection on Mac OS X, open the System Preferences from the -Menu. From the Internet & Wireless section, select Network.
Add a new network interface by clicking the +-sign. A new pane opens.
The Interface should be set to VPN, the VPN Type to use is PPTP. The service name of course is IPredator. Click Create.
The new interface needs to be supplied with a Server Address to connect to, which is pptp.ipredator.se. Enter your user name in the Account name field. Only allow Maximum (128 bit only) encryption. For later use, check Show VPN status in menu bar. Enter the Authentication Settings.
Enter your password. Click OK and enter the Advanced settings.
In the Options tab, make sure to have Send all traffic over VPN connection checked. Switch to the TCP/IP tab.
Restrict IPv6 to be Link-local only. Click OK.
Click Apply to save your settings. The PPTP interface is now configured.
To configure the running services on Mac OS X, open the System Preferences from the -Menu. Click Sharing.
We recommend to disable all services on a computer which is used for privacy related tasks. This might break some convenient features of Mac OS X, but at least while you are connected to the VPN, you really should refrain from having remote login or all kinds of sharing enabled.
Each single service shown in this preference pane leaks enough information to the Internet to make your machine and your identity clearly destinguishable from others.
To configure the Mac OS X Firewall, get back to the System Preferences. From the Personal section select Security & Privacy.
If the firewall is turned off, activate it now by clicking Turn On Firewall. Otherwise continue to the next step.
This is an optional step to further configure your firewall.
You can configure the firewall to be more restrictive then what it defaults to when just being enabled. This breaks compatibility for features like auto-discovery of services on the local network.
Click the Firewall Options… button. A new preference pane appears.
This is an optional step to further configure your firewall.
Check Block all incoming connections and click OK.
This is an optional step to further configure your firewall.
The firewall indicator light is amber instead of green due to having blocked incoming connections.
After having reviewed these settings, you can close the System Preferences.
To do a test run just click Connect and wait for the interface to come up and authenticate.
After a successful connection, the corresponding link status gets displayed. You can close the System Preferences now.
In case you have checked Show VPN status in menu bar, the connection can easily be controlled as shown below.
Once you are connected make sure no information is leaked by accident. Analyze your setup using our test page https://check.ipredator.se.
