This guide describes the configuration of a PPTP connection on Ubuntu Linux 15.10 using the Gnome Network Manager. It might also be applied to other Gnome-based desktop Linux distributions. The guide was tested on Ubuntu 16.04 (Xenial Xerus).
It is recommended to use OpenVPN to connect to our service. OpenVPN surpasses firewalls and routers easier and is more secure than PPTP. PPTP is considered broken and should really only be used on platforms where OpenVPN is not available.
Instead of setting up PPTP, please follow the corresponding OpenVPN guide.
To start the configuration of a new network connection on Ubuntu Linux, click on the Network Manager icon in the system tray and select Edit Connections… The Network Connections configured on your system are shown. Switch to the VPN tab and select Add.
For the connection type choose Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) and click Create…
The Connection name should be set to IPredator, the Gateway to use is pptp.ipredator.se. Click Advanced… to edit the PPTP Advanced Options.
The only authentication method checked for IPredator should be MSCHAPv2. Make sure there is no other authentication method selected. Furthermore, have Point-to-Point encryption (MPPE) along with 128-bit (most secure) security and stateful encryption checked. Disable all other compression mechanisms and enable to send PPP echo packets. Click OK.
If you experience disconnects try to disable the stateful encryption or lower your MTU in steps but not further than 1200 bytes.
Save your settings.
Back at the Network Connections window, you can see that the new connection is now listed. Time to try it out. Close the Network Connections.
From the system tray, the new connection is now conveniently available. Navigate to the VPN Connections and select IPredator.
If you saved your VPN credentials before, you will now be asked to enter your login credentials to open the keychain, otherwise enter your IPredator password. Do so and wait until the connection is established. The connection status will be shown as a notification message.
Once you are connected make sure no information is leaked by accident. Analyze your setup using our test page https://check.ipredator.se.
