This guide describes the configuration of a PPTP connection on Windows 10 using the Operating System's built in client.
It is recommended to use OpenVPN to connect to our service. OpenVPN surpasses firewalls and routers easier and is more secure than PPTP. PPTP is considered broken and should really only be used on platforms where OpenVPN is not available.
Instead of setting up PPTP, please follow the corresponding OpenVPN guide.
Click on the Windows button in the left bottom corner to open the start menu. Select Settings.
Click Network and Internet.
From the menu on the left select the VPN panel. Click Add a VPN connection.
Enter the connection name IPredator and add the server address to use: pptp.ipredator.se. In the username field enter your username chosen at signup and fill in your password. If you want Windows to remember your credentials for you, check the box at the bottom. Click Save.
Back in the VPN Menu you are presented with the new IPredator connection. Click on Change adapter options.
Right click on the IPredator adapter and choose Properties.
In the General tab, verify that pptp.ipredator.se is used as the host name. Click the Options tab.
Check Remember my credentials. Click PPP Settings.
Inside the PPP Settings, it is important to have LCP extensions enabled and to have software compression disabled. Close with OK and go on to the Security tab.
Make sure that the Type of VPN is Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP), so the client does not probe for different kinds of VPN. Set the Data encryption to Maximum strength encryption (disconnect if server declines). In the Authentication context, make sure to have only Microsoft CHAP Version 2 (MS-CHAP v2) selected. Switch to the Networking tab.
File and printer sharing should generally be disabled on any VPN connection. By disabling these protocols you prevent your machine from inadvertently leaking information to the Internet.
Uncheck IPv6 from the list of available network protocols. Also uncheck File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks as well as Client for Microsoft Networks from the list of used items and click OK. Finally, enter the last tab, Sharing.
If you like to make your IPredator connection available to other users available on your machine, check the corresponding setting. Otherwise, just close the dialog window by clicking OK and return to the Desktop.
If you enable Internet Connection Sharing your setup might need extra tweaks to make it work.
It is time to bring up your newly created network connection. Click on the network symbol in the taskbar and in the opening window on IPredator.
In the Network and Internet windows select the IPredator connection and click on Connect.
Windows starts to connect...
... and succeeds to connect.
If you want to check at any later point in time if you are still connected just click on the network symbol in the taskbar.
Once you are connected make sure no information is leaked by accident. Analyze your setup using our test page https://check.ipredator.se.
